Harleston and Wortwell Junior Angling Club

Harleston Angling Club Junior Results For June 27th 2002

Brilliant! Is the only description needed for this Record Breaking Junior fishing competition, held at the Weybread Middle Pit.Winner Daniel Elliott shows off his 44lb winning catch.

For the second week running the sixteen keen anglers were blessed with some excellent fishing conditions, the warm southwest wind and good cloud cover making the lakes big carp feed. This pushed the weights up considerably producing a new junior club record weight of 258lb of fish caught in the three hours, and the average catch a whopping 16lb with no dry nets recorded.

The top spot was a close battle between eleven-year-old Daniel Elliott from Starston who was last weeks winner and fourteen year old Kyle Savage the runner up in last years club series from Lodden, with only one small Carp separating them at the final whistle.

Daniel drew well picking the shallow peg twenty-three, and was landing his first fish within minutes of the match starting, he then caught quality carp steadily for the rest of the three hour competition to finish with 10 good carp and a few small fish for a massive 44lb 8oz his biggest match catch to date. All his fish were caught on Pedigree Chum dog biscuits presented on the surface with a small controller float, five pounds line and a size twelve hook. Kyle with one of his three double figure Carp.

Kyle drew the corner peg twenty-eight and fished with the same surface tactics as Daniel to take three real monsters weighing 11lb 8oz, 10lb 8oz, and 10lb 4oz and two smaller fish, the first time more than one double figure fish has ever been weighed in during a junior competition at Weybread. Kyle caught his biggest fish in the final minutes to close the gap on Daniel but finished just 14oz off top spot with another new personal best match catch of 43lb 10oz.

The third and fourth places produced another thrilling battle between James Bygrave from Chedgrave on peg eleven and travelling partner Ben Carver peg thirty four, they both had double figure fish in their four fish bags, both anglers again used floating dog biscuits to fool the fish. Ben just edging in front with 31lb 11oz to take third place from James with 30lb 5oz.

A total of six ten pounds plus carp were brought to the scales with the biggest a thirteen and a half pound monster falling to Charlie Hodd. The thirteen year old took the fish on pole fished expander pellet, fished on the bottom with four pounds line and was a personal best for the youngster. Charlie also caught the biggest bream of the season in his 22lb 8oz fifth placed catch.
