Harleston Angling Club Junior Results For the Ashford Cup 2002.After bagging up all summer on Harleston angling clubs prolific Carp stocks during the Thursday evening summer series seventeen keen youngsters again lined the banks of Weybread Club Pit to do battle in this annual Open Event, held on Saturday afternoon. In the finish it was the Carp who had their revenge cruising around watching the young anglers slowly shrivel and melt in the blistering heat of the afternoon sun. With the lack of quality fish it turned out to be a very close competition with only one big fish separating first place from last place, this left everybody still with a winning chance right up to the final whistle.
In the end it was as much a story of lost fish as the fish landed, with Chris Tricker taking a very early lead after landing a good Carp in the first few seconds of the match, only to lose two more later on costing him a top place finish. Daniel Gallant had the same bad luck losing six fish in the dense reed beds on peg 14 after landing one in the opening minutes, but with lost fish counting for nothing the match was wide open for a late charge by the Diss visitors of Ricky Leggett and Matthew Spurling to walk away with the top prizes. Diss star Ricky Leggett drew peg 28 on the road bank and made good use of his shady peg to steadily winkle out nearly a pound of small Roach and Rudd in the first hour, all caught on pole fished maggots presented close to the thick marginal reeds. A mid match tactical change to the method feeder wrapped with a sweet smelling Geers ground bait sealed the win with a 6 3/4lb bonus carp towards the end of the competition, the small fish proved decisive with his final weight of 7lb 9oz just twelve ounces clear of Matthew Spurling. Ricky picked up a new Shakespeare polo shirt and a top of the range Okuma fishing reel with his trophy.
In third place with 6lb 13oz was the Harleston Angling Club regular Paul Bliss, he drew peg 26 and started well catching small Gudgeon and roach fishing a small waggler with maggots from close to the reeds. Paul took a well deserved mid match lead netting a bonus Carp weighing 5lb after a tense battle, Defending champion Kyle Savage from Lodden fishing the corner peg 8 landed two small Common carp early in the competition on pole fished expander pellets; he then made a last gasp challenge for his trophy defence adding two more fish very late in the match after a tactical rig change. His fourth place weight of 6lb 3oz was only one fish short of top spot; Kyle also won a quality selection of ground baits and fishing tackle. Harleston Junior Angling club would like to thank Waveney Valley Angling Centre, Shakespeare, Okuma, P.M. Pegg Angling, Geers and Whizzo groundbaits for donating the top quality prizes. The Diss Express, Diss Mercury and The Eastern Daily Press for their excellent press coverage. Full result
