Harleston Angling Club Junior Results For the Autumn Shield 2002.

Another excellent turnout of twenty super keen young anglers lined the road bank of Weybread Jack Weatherley with his trophy and prize.Ocean Pit on Saturday to compete in the second annual Autumn Shield fishing competition, held by Harleston Junior Angling Club. The clear blue skies and bright autumn sunshine coupled with a gin clear, still lake made the competition a low weight but close fought contest with only 4oz separating the top two after the four hours fishing and only three blanks.

Eleven year old Jack Weatherley sealed his first Open match win with an excellent all-round performance from peg 13 Jack took an early lead, after only an half hour by netting a good Bream of two pounds on ground bait feeder with red maggot hook bait. Once in front he made the all-important tactical change to the pole with red maggot hook baits and feeding very lightly with maggot to add small Roach and Perch taken at various depths to boost his final weight to 3lb 3.5oz just enough to hold off the late challenge from thirteen year old Charlie Hodd.

Charlie Hodd from Wingfield fishing peg fourCharlie Hodd weighed this 2lb 15oz catch to take the runners up place. In a thrilling last hour Charlie really put the pressure on Jack by netting small Roach e produced yet another good performance fishing his favourite method, the shallow waggler, Charlie suffered a slow start catching only a few small fish on pole fished maggot in the first two hours before changing to the waggler presented well of bottom. Then by feeding very lightly and carefully he slowly tempted the hook shy Roach to feed on his single maggot hook baits presented on tiny size 22 hooks. very cast, before the time ran out leaving Charlie 4oz short with his hard earned final weight of 2lb 15oz.

Third place finished with a tie between Lisa Sillett from Weybread and ten year old Kieron Loane both anglers having similar catches made up of small Roach and Perch weighing 1lb 5oz. Lisa balled it in on the whistle and had a storming start catching all her fish in the first 45 minutes of the match, before losing a fish to a good Pike which killed her swim for the remainder of the competition. Kieron alternated between groundbait feeder and waggler to slowly winkle out fish for the full four hours.

Fourth was again a tie with Adam Barber and James Shiplee both weighing 1lb 1.5oz, Adam having a catch containing some of the smallest Perch I have ever seen.

Harleston Junior Angling club would like to thank Waveney Valley Angling Centre, Shakespeare, Okuma, P.M. Pegg Angling, Geers and Whizzo groundbaits for donating the top quality prizes. The Diss Express and the Diss Mercury for their excellent press coverage.
