Waveney Valley Angling.

Sea Fishing around the Suffolk coast line.

Dunwich beach.

Beach fishing has lost much of its appeal in recent years with the over fishing of the North sea, the catches dropped and so did the crowds of anglers who used to flock to the East Anglian coast each winter in search of the cod shoals. These cod shoals are now few and far between but the void left by the cod is slowly being filled with other species such as bass, flounder, dabs and dogfish.

These new species have led to tactical changes along this shallow coastline once regarded only as long distance beaches many of the new species like to hang much closer to the shoreline especially the bass.

I still try and get on the beach a few times each year after that giant cod or Bass I'm not to fussy which, it's also real good fun and makes a welcome change.

Tackle

Tackle for the beach needs to be strong, purpose made sea rods and reels can be bought new for very reasonable money these days, good strong carp tackle will also do provided you pick a reasonably calm day to go.My line and lead style of choice. Lines also need to be strong to combat the abuse it takes from the sand and gravel 15lb is a good choice and is best bought in bulk spools of a quality brand I like maxima, strong and hard and has been around for donkeys years and stood the test of time. Using big spiked leads up to eight ounce means you will need a shock leader for safety reasons 10lb per ounce is recommended. The leads which have a built in bait clip I think are the best and saves adding an additional bait clip to the rig which is just more expense and more bits to tangle.

Baits.

YOU NEVER KNOW! Workmate Rubber shows off with a 4lb 8oz cod caught from the Dirty Wall.Lugworm is the most popular bait on the east coast and probably the best. Ragworm, squid and fish baits also make good alternatives or cocktail baits, my favorite is the squid and lugworm cocktail. Squid being a cheap bait helps.Good quality bait can be ordered from
