Weybread Ocean Pit.
The depth varies considerably with just 3ft (1m) on the top of some of the the gravel bars, up to nearly 10m at the Eastern end of the pit (Far right of the picture) Early season the main target species are the Bream these shoal fish average around the 4lb mark and bags of well over 100lb are taken regularly from the noted hot pegs. The main tactic for the Bream is the open-ended groundbait feeder fished on top of the gravel bars where the water warms up quickly, balling in at the start especially on longer sessions also works well. Pegs 7 to 9, 14-19, 47, 48 and the early seventies are all worth a try depending on wind direction. Early season is also prime time for the Tench which can be caught from many of the pegs with cover on the inside, the tench average 4lb with reports of some double figure fish falling to boilies last season (2003) and bags of ten fish are possible although rare with good weather conditions. Areas worth a try are the reeds (13-20), spongy bank (35-45) peg 62 and the eighties with peg 88 my favorite. From around the middle of july every year huge shoals of Roach seem to appear from no where to give excellent sport for float anglers, get it right with the waggler and bronze maggot fished shallow and you could be rewarded with 20lb plus of quality fish. The pit also holds a good stock of pike for the predator angler with fish to 20lb reported, deadbaits are the top winter bait and lures work well in the summer. The Carp fishing on the lake is becoming more popular every year the stocking levels are low but the potential for a real monster exists, but these fish can prove hard to find in this large expanse of water. |
